For several athletes on the Cedar Valley CourtKings roster, playing internationally is a goal many set at the beginning of their careers. Having the ability to travel outside the United States and play the game they love can be a huge opportunity to showcase their talent and abilities. For one member of the CourtKings, that dream is becoming a reality.
Forward/center Raheem Tyner, who has re-signed with the CourtKings for the 2018 season, has also signed on to play for the HAB Caicos Sonics prior to the start of the upcoming Midwest Basketball League season. The Sonics are based in the Turks and Caicos Islands, located approximately 600 miles off the coast of Miami, Florida, and will play in the 2018 Copa Mitchell America Cup, a tournament consisting of several professional teams in the United States and Latin America.
Tyner, the 2017 MBL Rookie of the Year, served as a major piece in the CourtKings run at back-to-back championships and an undefeated 19-0 season in 2017. The 6’ 7” Minnesota native saw action in all nineteen games averaging 19.8 points and 5.9 rebounds per game while shooting 60% from the field, 75% from the free throw line, and an impressive 45% from beyond the three point arc.
The Sonics next scheduled game is set for January 18 as they will take on Pueblo Nuevo of the Santiago League. The Mitchell Cup will begin tournament play on February 1 in Santiago, Dominican Republic and run through February 6. Tyner will return to the CourtKings following the conclusion of the tournament in time for the MBL season.
