The Cedar Valley CourtKings have rounded out their 2019 coaching staff with the hiring of Tom Mccellan-Bey as an assistant coach. He will join the staff of third year head coach Michael Mohlis and newly hired assistant coach Brian Jo.
A Waterloo native and local business owner, Bey has been involved in coaching basketball at various levels since beginning his coaching career in 1989. He began coaching youth basketball in the Cedar Valley area in 2007.
Tom coached a championship team for the fourth-sixth grade division in Waterloo Leisure Services play, and from 2009-2011, won multiple AAU tournament championships with the IMPACT Foundation. In 2012, Tom formed the B.A.M. Foundation, where he coached players aged 12-18. With a strong winning percentage, Tom’s teams often played above their designated age bracket.
Since 2017, Tom has served as the freshman-sophomore boys basketball coach at Waterloo Columbus High School, and as an assistant under varsity head coach Drake Schuring. He has been described as a positive role model in the lives of today’s youth.
“Tom brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our coaching staff and will be an excellent mentor to our players,” said Gary Rima, the CourtKings owner and general manager. “Tom is a Waterloo native and is anxious to help our team and organization continue to accomplish big things in the city and for our players.”
The CourtKings will hold an open tryout on Sunday, October 28 at 1:00pm at the Boys and Girls Club at 515 Lime Street in Waterloo. There will be a $25 tryout fee.
