Decision on CourtKings Season Coming Friday

The fate of the 5th season of Cedar Valley CourtKings minor league basketball will be announced on Friday May 15, that according to the OBA League office and the CourtKings.

The 5th year of Cedar Valley CourtKings basketball was suppose to start on Sun. April 5th with a home game versus the Kansas City Warriors in the new league the C’Kings were to play in, The OBA. Due to the coronavirus the earliest a team could play a league game was moved to Memorial Day Weekend, with some teams opening up on the following weekend May 30, with each of the 27 teams slated to play 8 regular season games instead of 16 with the playoffs to follow. With that change in start time the CourtKings are now slated to open the 2020 season at home on Saturday May 30th hosting the CEO Kings out of the Twin Cities at the Cedar Valley SportsPlex in Waterloo. Now it appears that start date is in jeopardy also due to arenas and gyms still unable to open up for games. CourtKings owner and OBA League commissioner Gary Rima said, “Friday the OBA front office will make a final decision on the 2020 season of the OBA and its 27 teams in the four divisions and the 10 teams in its developmental division. IF we cannot start the season by the end of the May then it looks like there will not be a 2020 season. We are all hoping we can still play a modified schedule this year but if not then we will move to an April 2021 start”.

The CourtKings coaching staff and players are anxious to play this year but they also want the games to be a safe environment for coaches, players, fans and staff. Just like for other teams in the league, from Minnesota to Texas and Kansas to Michigan, we need our great home arena, the Cedar Valey SportsPlex, to be fully open and available for games and fan attendance. The SportsPlex wants that too but they have guidelines they must follow so a lot has to fall into place for this season to happen.

“We will keep hoping for the best and appreciate all of our fans and sponsors for their patience during these unprecedented times,” said Rima. “Check back this Friday May 15 for an update”.
