With the sixteen game regular season in the books, the biggest test for the Cedar Valley CourtKings has now arrived in their quest to win a third consecutive Midwest Basketball League championship. That’s right. The MBL Playoffs have arrived, and the CourtKings are gearing up for another title run.
This year the eight team, single elimination postseason tournament moves to Collegeville, Minnesota on the campus on St. John’s University. The three day event will bring the league’s best together for a battle to crown a champion. To open postseason play, the CourtKings will face off against a familiar opponent in the first round.
The Springfield Panthers (10-6) finished second in the Southwest Division, four game back of the first place Chicago Fury to clinch their first playoff berth. The Panthers and CourtKings both met back on May 27th in Illinois’ capital city with the Cedar Valley claiming a ten point victory, 126-116. Both teams battled deep into the third quarter in a back and forth game that saw the Panthers hold a five point lead heading into the final quarter of play. But in the fourth, the CourtKings outscored their opponent 36-20 to rally ahead and hold on for the win. Brady Burford lit up the scoreboard with 28 points, eight rebounds, and an assist, while both Aundre Hicks and Anthony James put up over 20 point games themselves.
The CourtKings and Panthers are the fourth and final first round game on Friday night. The scheduled first tip is set for approximately 8:00pm at St. John’s Sexton Arena, following the third opening round game between the Fort Wayne Vision and Chicago Knights. Fans can tune into Joel Wauters with the online radio call of the game at cvcourtkings.com with the pregame show beginning at 7:50pm. And of course, be sure to follow the CourtKings on our website and on social media all weekend for tournament updates and news as the Cedar Valley chases its third MBL title.
