CourtKings to host Eagan in West Division Championship Game

What began as a field of seven teams in the MBL West Division Playoffs has been trimmed down to its final two. The automatic bid to the MBL Final Four will be punched this Saturday night, July 13 as the top-seeded Cedar Valley CourtKings (16-1) host the second-seeded Eagan Bulldogs in the MBL West Division Championship Game at the Cedar Valley SportsPlex in Waterloo.

The Kings enter Saturday’s division championship after a first-round bye, and a 135-104 win over the fourth-seeded Green Bay Area Titans on July 7. For the Bulldogs, they defeated the seventh-seeded Minnesota Broncos 134-114 at home in the first-round on July 6 before edging out the third-seeded Iowa Elite Pro the next day by a score of 117-111.

It has been a journey for the CourtKings this season, who posted a league best 15-1 record for a second straight season. After opening the season with a narrow win at home, they dropped their second game on the schedule to Eagan 126-122 on April 13 in Minnesota. It was a hard fought game that five CourtKings finished with double-digit scoring figures, led by Brady Burford’s 27 points. Anthony James netted 22 including six three-point baskets, as Emeche Wells scored 20, and both Aundre Hicks and Jaree Crawford recorded 16 points each.

The loss at Eagan would be the first and only loss for the CourtKings the remainder of the regular season as Cedar Valley rolled through the rest of the schedule, which saw the Kings avenge their early season loss at home on June 9 against the Bulldogs 135-124. Led by Burford’s game-high 30 points, six Cedar Valley players scored in double-digit figures. Hicks finished the night with 27, while James scored 15. In his first game back with the CourtKings after playing in Spain, Mack Johnson tallied 15, as Jared Sutherland scored 12, and Wells notched 11 points.

The winner of this game will advance to the MBL Final Four on July 20 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to meet up with champions of the East and South Division, as well as one at-large team in the league semifinals. The teams that win the Final Four games will then advance to play for the MBL championship on July 21.
