Mother’s day at the Cedar Valley Sportsplex for the CourtKings was very fruitful on May 14. The team was hosting the MBL Select and selected this night to dismantle the team by over 40 points. Though the scoreboard blared 149-105 at the end, the game started and ended towards the end first half as CourtKing after CourtKing threw down crowd-pleasing dunks.
The 1st dunk of the night was supplied by David Stanley. Before this dunk, the game seemed to be in a constant state of basketball purgatory. Miss, fast break, miss. Following this dunk however, the crowd and the CourtKings settled in. This dunk fueled the mid-range frenzy that BJ Walker then orchestrated.
“I was just taking what they gave me. They give me the mid-range, so I’m going to rise up and knock it down.” Walker said.
The 2nd and 3rd dunks came courtesy of high-flyer Terry Carter, who seemed hell-bent on bringing down the hoop as well as the opposing team’s confidence. Both dunks were then followed by the team leading scorer, Raijon Kelly’s anchoring 29-point performance.
“I was just being aggressive. During the game I pick and choose my spots. I get in the paint a lot to create for others, and sometimes I just drill them all.” Kelly said.
With spare time on the clock in the 2nd quarter, Kelly began to score in bunches. Behind the 3-point arc, mid-range, and through contact. Everything seemed to be going in. After scoring on 4 straight CourtKings possessions, Kelly planted himself on the wing, calling for the ball. When the double team came, Kelly found fellow guard Anthony James in the corner for an in-rhyme corner 3, proving Kelly’s ability to elevate the entire team.
This open corner 3-point shot by James became a trend throughout the game as most of the CourtKings were able to find open shots regularly all night long. This was due to the heavy zone that was being played by the Select team, and also the willingness the players had to get their teammates involved.
“Unselfishness. As they play they are trying to share the ball with their team. That is a huge credit to those guys in the locker room that they will so unselfish as to share the basketball as much as they did.” Michael Mohlis CourtKing’s interim head coach said.
This win keeps the CourtKings undefeated on the season, now 8-0. Next up for the team will be the Minnesota Broncos on May 20.
Other noteworthy point totals: Anthony James 23, Raheem Tyner 21, Aundre Hicks 20.
