As the regular reason window slowly begins to close on the 2019 Midwest Basketball League season, the Cedar Valley CourtKings are making the most of their time left before the MBL Playoffs begin in July. That was evident on Saturday night as the CourtKings (12-1) welcomed the Minnesota Broncos (6-7) to Waterloo on a cool, stormy June night.
In their last meeting on April 14 in Anoka, Minnesota, Cedar Valley started out slow on defense before bolting out of gates and locking down the Broncos fast paced offense in the second half en route to 115-94 win. In their second and final meeting of the regular season, the Kings made sure their opponents wouldn’t get an early lead on them.
One week after his season debut with the CourtKings, Mack Johnson helped spark the Kings early on with both teams straddling for control of the early lead. Brady Burford and Aundre Hicks helped guide the offense down the track, while the Bronco’s Josh Gonnigan provided a large boost for the visiting team. At the end of the first period, it was the Kings with the slight edge, 31-30.
In the second, Burford and David Stanley helped light up the floor from both inside and outside the arc. With a strong attack in the paint, the Kings made work of Minnesota defenders to extend their lead into the halftime break. Led by eight points by both Burford and Stanley, Cedar Valley saw their lead grow from one point, to 15 in just a few minutes to take a 64-49 lead into the halftime break.
Jared Sutherland, who only scored three points off the bench in the first half, exploded for 12 in the third quarter. A number of CourtKings also got in on the action out of halftime, with Chamar Wilson scoring his first baskets of the game. For the second straight period, the Kings held their opponents to only 19 points in the period as they took a 101-68 lead into the fourth.
Burford and Hicks guided the offense down the final stretch with victory well in sight. Isaac Freeman and Queshawn Roby also saw quality action in the final minutes as the CourtKings rolled onto their 11th consecutive victory, 129-101 over the Broncos.
Six Kings finished the night with double-digit scoring figures, led by Burford’s 20 points. Hicks ended the night with 19, Johnson with 17, Jaree Crawford with 15, Emeche Wells with 13, and Stanley with 12 points.
With the victory, the CourtKings have secured a top two seed in the West Division of the upcoming MBL Playoffs. Cedar Valley will host a home playoff game on Saturday, July 6 at 7:00PM against an opponent yet to be determined. A first round victory would then advance the Kings to the second round, where they would host another 7:00PM game on Sunday, July 7.
