CourtKings Pounce on the Lions

WATERLOO, Iowa—The Cedar Valley CourtKings played host to league newcomers, the Lincoln Lions. The CourtKings rolled past the Lions, 111-72.

After a rough opening sequence, the CourtKings jumped out to an 18-5 lead over the Lions and would never relinquish the lead.

Six players for the CourtKings would end in double figures after tonight’s contest. Marvin Singleton would lead all scorers with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Andre Norris scored 17 points and Wakefield Ellison added 15. Lamar Wall had 13 points and Aundre’ Hicks and LaDon Singleton each chipped in 10.

The CourtKings capitalized on a series of turnovers by the Lions throughout the first quarter and led at the first break, 35-18.

“We feel like we had a subpar performance on defense last week,” said Clay Cook. “Play strong on defense. Rebounds won’t be as easy next week.”

The Lions got under the CourtKings skin and forced some turnovers as they tried to trim the lead.

Lincoln Lions head coach Dominique Hobbs remarked, “They were bigger and slide their feet a bit better than we do.”

Ellison led the team into halftime with back-to-back baskets. Hicks finished the half with free throws to lead the Lions, 61-37.

The second half saw the CourtKings hitting the cruise button on the controls.  Marvin Singleton threw 7 points up on the board and added two rebounds on his way to a double-double.

“We capitalized on rebounding,” said Marvin Singleton.

The fourth quarter saw the CourtKings continue to keep their foot on the gas pedal and a strong defense effort.

“We put a lot of focus on the defense end,” said CourtKings head coach Stan Hughes. “A team that has more than one player in double figures can cause a whole lot of problems. It can be anyone’s night any given night.”

Fans, be sure to come out next Saturday, June 11, as the CourtKings take on the league leaders, the Chicago Fury at 7:30 p.m. Chandler’s Janesville Locker LLC is the game sponsor and the first 100 fans will receive a CourtKings team poster.
