It is often said that the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. Those first steps were taken by the Cedar Valley CourtKings Saturday afternoon as their 2019 training camp got underway at the Boys and Girls Club Gym in Waterloo.
12 players attended the opening day of practices with head coach Michael Mohlis, as well as assistants Brian Jo and Tommy Mccellan-Bey looking on. With nine new faces to the CourtKings roster this season including Emeche Wells, Jaree Crawford, Jared Sutherland and Kelvin Mackey, it was evident early on through practice that a mindset of hardwork and dedication was present from the players making their camp debut with the Cedar Valley.
“I’m excited,” said guard Aundre Hicks, who is entering his fourth season with CourtKings. “We’re here to just play, to work hard as part of a team.”
The CourtKings will train over the next two weeks before playing an exhibition game on Satuday, March 23 at the Husky Gym in Oelwein, IA against the Illinois Bulldogs of the ABA. Doors will open at 3:00 p.m. with the opening tip at 4:00 p.m. Admission will be $5 per person with Oelwein students able to get into the game for $1 with an Oelwein school ID.
“A lot of work to do but a good chance to see where we’re at,” Hicks says. “The game will be a good gauge on what we need to work on for the season opener.”
