As cold winds whistled outside of the gym of the Boys and Girls Club in Waterloo, twenty-two men brought their sweat and determination to the court during the Cedar Valley CourtKings final open tryout on December 9.
“We’re really excited about the quality of guys, not only the numbers of guys that showed up, but the quality of players” said CourtKings owner and general manager Gary Rima after the two and a half hour session. “We have some tough decisions to make on what guys to sign and not sign. I think we filled some needs today with some of the guys we saw, and I think we’ll build a pretty good roster for 2018.” In addition to new faces looking for a potential roster spot come opening day, several players from the team’s first open tryout on October 8 returned to the court. “We had five guys return the first tryout and I saw a lot of growth in those guys from the first time, which tells me they’ve been getting in the gym, and they’ve been working on their game” said head coach Michael Mohlis. Putting together the puzzle of a roster will be challenging he explained. “There’s a lot of talent that between Gary, (assistant coach) Billy (Campbell), and I, we have to go through and find how they fit or who fits into our team with our returning guys.”
Training camp is scheduled to begin in March with the CourtKings opening the 2018 season at home against the Wisconsin Game Changers at 7:30pm at the Cedar Valley SportsPlex in Waterloo on April 8.
