The Cedar Valley CourtKings, the MBL (Midweset Basketball League) Champions, can add another award to their inaugural season. Owner and General Manager Gary Rima today was named the ‘MBL Executive of the Year’. It was an incredible first year for the CourtKings, a minor league basketball team headquartered out of Waterloo, Iowa. The CourtKings won the first ever MBL League Championship by winning three games in three days in August in the MBL playoffs in Minneapolis. The CourtKings had to defeat both the MBL East and MBL West division champions on back to back days to win it. CourtKings point guard Anthony James was named the MVP of the MBL Playoffs. He also was named to the MBL All-Star team and won the 3 point shooting contest. Two Cedar Valley CourtKing players are now overseas playing professionally as Andre Norris is in Spain and Marvin Singleton is in the NBL-Canada. Both Norris and Singleton were MBL All-Stars also.
Now Rima has been named the executive the year in the league. The CourtKings led the MBL in attendance and provided one of the best game day atmospheres and fan friendly family entertainment in the league.
“I know my name is on this award but there were a lot of great people who helped make our first year the success that it was and this award is for them too. To my wife, my Coaches, players, front office staff, game day staff, volunteer workers, dance team and interns, this is for all of their hard work and dedication they put in for our team!” Gary Rima said. “I also want to thank the staff at the Cedar Valley SportsPlex in Waterloo for doing a great job in helping us run a first class game day operation at their great facility! Also a huge thanks to the fans and business’s who supported us in our inaugural season!”
Owner and President of the MBL Michael Wright said, “The MBL would like to present Mr Gary Rima with the 2016 Executive Of The Year Award. Besides winning the 2016 MBL Championship and running a tight basketball operations program, Mr Rima also did a lot of behind the scenes events from kids clinics, to providing tickets to the youth at the Cedar Valley Boys and Girls Club for all home games, to attending parades and helping his hometown when they were hit with heavy rain that caused severe flooding throughout the area. To the City of Waterloo,IA I know you all stood behind this guy the whole season and now you have something else to add to the collection.”
The Cedar Valley CourtKings will start the defense of the MBL title in early April when they open up the season at Milwaukee on April 8 and then play their home opener on Sunday April 9 at the Cedar Valley SportsPlex in Waterloo against the Minnesota Broncos at 7:30pm.
