The Midwest Basketball League season has come and gone in the blink of an eye. From early April to mid-July, the field of teams has been reduced from 25 to four. Those four remaining teams will put everything on the line this weekend in Fort Wayne, Indiana in the MBL Final Four during the final weekend of the 2019 season.
After posting a league best 15-1 regular season, the Cedar Valley CourtKings (16-2) locked up a first-round bye in the MBL West Division Playoffs with the top seed among the seven teams in the West Playoffs. The CourtKings used a strong offensive fourth quarter to blow past the Green Bay Area Titans in the West semifinal round by a score of 135-104 on July 7 in Waterloo to advance to the West Division Championship Game. In the Division title game, the Eagan Bulldogs stunned the CourtKings on their home floor to receive the West Division’s automatic bid to the Final Four, winning 111-102.
While Cedar Valley was unable to secure the West Division championship, they did punch their ticket to Fort Wayne via an at-large bid. With a spot secured, the CourtKings will now face the East Division champion Fort Wayne Vision (14-2) on Saturday, July 20 at the Concordia Theological Seminary Gym.
The Vision have been one of the league’s top teams out of the East Division, playing in the previous two MBL Championship games. Cedar Valley last played against the Vision in the 2017 MBL title game in Huntsville, Texas, where the CourtKings won by a final score of 121-106 to win their second consecutive league title, and cap a 19-0 undefeated campaign. Last season, it was T.C. Elite who knocked off Fort Wayne to deny them a championship in a thrilling game in Collegeville, Minnesota.
Fort Wayne enters the Final Four after defeating the fourth-seeded Springfield Panthers 138-115, and the third-seeded Chicago Fury 122-106 to win the East Division crown.
Cedar Valley and Fort Wayne will play at 7:00PM eastern time (6:00PM Iowa time), following the first Final Four game, featuring the Eagan Bulldogs against the South Division champion Dallas Kings (9-1) at 4:00PM eastern time (3:00PM Iowa time). The winners of the two league semi-final games will advance to Sunday’s MBL Championship Game to be played at 3:00PM eastern time (2:00 Iowa time).
